GMAC and Chrysler-Fiat Mashup

One of the more interesting details about today's announcement by Obama about Chrysler's chapter 11 filing was the deal with GMAC to be Chrysler-Fiat's primary lender. Said Obama:

The path we're taking also involves steps to shore up
financing, because we cannot have viable car companies
without strong car financing companies. It's now clear
that Chrysler Financial -- the institution that finances
Chrysler cars and dealers -- would on its own require an
unacceptably large stream of taxpayer money to remain
viable -- and that's something I refuse to provide. And
that is why, as part of this agreement, GMAC, an
independent bank holding company that finances General
Motors, has agreed to finance new Chrysler sales. We will
be providing additional capital to GMAC to help unlock our
frozen credit markets and free up lending so that consumers
can get auto loans and dealers can finance their
inventories;

I wonder if this was in a way punishment to Chrysler Finance for refusing the $750 million TARP infusion because the execs didn't want to abide by the compensation rules? By refusing to prop up Chrysler Finance, Obama is really sticking it to Cerberus. As part of the requirement for GMAC becoming a bank, Cerberus must sell off most of its stake.

Using GMAC helps GM because GM still owns a large minority stake GMAC. And because GMAC is a bank holding company, it is easier for the government to support through the TARP.

It also may be a hint of Obama's future intentions. If Chrysler-Fiat fails, the groundwork for GM absorbing Chrysler may be laid here.

The Isuzu Rodeo

I remember back in high school meeting with my friends at the local Sonic drive-in. We'd hang out and munch on some chili cheese tator tots while sipping down a cool forty-four ounces of cherry lime-aid. Sonic was open pretty late, so it was a good place to hang out until curfew. There was one night that I'll never forget; the day that my arch nemesis looked like a fool in front of everybody.

It was Friday night at about 8pm. Me and some classmates had a science project due the following Monday and we wanted to crank it out before ahead of time. We were assigned teams to work in, so the pairing was pretty random. Out of the six team members, I had two friends, two people I didn't really know that well and the stereo-typical high school football jock (read: total meat head). I had picked up my two friends in my Isuzu Rodeo and the Jock had picked up the other two team members. When he showed up, it was obvious he didn't want to be there. Looking back, who could blame him; he was more popular than us and we were doing school work on a Friday night, but the fact remained that the project needed to be done before Monday.

When he arrived, he immediately made fun of my ride. He commented how stupid my bumper guards looked and that the running boards looked like they were made of cardboard. I was used to his idiocracy, so I ignored his provocations. After about 30 minutes of working on the science project, it was apparent that the Jock was getting antsy and wasn't going to help. So I suggested that we meet again on Saturday morning to get more work done. The Jock immediately said we could get the work done on Sunday and that there was no way he could meet on Saturday. We still had a lot of work to do and I knew what he wasn't going to be doing anything on Saturday other than nursing a hang over, so I asked him what his plans were.

He immediately lost his temper, telling me not to question him. Wanting to not get pulverized by this guy, but not wanting to let him off the hook either, I said "Well we need your input on the project too, so when are you available to meet up?" The jock took this as an opportunity to escape the Friday night meeting and replied "I can meet on Sunday, you figure out a time and I'll call you on Sunday." Without another word being said he got in his truck, threw it into reverse and hit the accelerator. You know how teens can get a little amped up sometimes and get ahead of themselves? Well he really hit the pedal hard, squealed the tires and backed up into my Rodeo. He got out of his truck with an astonished look on his face.

My Rodeo didn't have so much as a scratch on it, thanks to my beefy bumper guard, but his Ford's bumper was bent in and pushed out of place. He had to call his parents about hitting my SUV and they grounded him for two weeks and ordered him to come home right then. With a big smile on my face, I said "So have you plans for Saturday changed, or should we still meet up on Sunday?"

My aftermarket parts not only saved my paint, but they also saved face. If you want to see if there are any aftermarket parts that fit your vehicle, check out these pages on bumper guardsrunning boards. and

The Latest Aston Martin One-77

After numerous concept presentations, Aston Martin has finally presented the first fully completed one-77. New British super car presentation was held at the exclusive car show Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este in Italy. The concept car exterior design was already seen in pictures, but now it was possible to see the car interior.

There will be made only 77 Aston Martin One-77, and each car will cost at least 1,8 million dollars. Very soon they will make the first custom-made copy. All the small series production will be completed by the end of the next year. Moreover, as Aston Martin representatives have pointed out, each car will be made in close conjunction with its next owner, and the manufacturer will use its best efforts to be sure that none of 77 unique cars is coming into the so-called profiteers hands.

Like F1 racing car, the One-77 design is based on the ultra-light and highly resistant carbon fiber moncok (continuous body structure). At moncok there has been attached the four wheel double lever suspension and it is almost the same as it is on F1 racing car, where the vertical suspension is converted into horizontal. It is also the first time when a street car has received DSSV technology, which allows to adjust damping characteristics very precise whit out removing the suspension elements off the car.

The One-77 engine is also unique. Although it on Aston Martin popular 6.0-liter V12 engine's base, its capacity has increased to 7.3 liters, meanwhile the engine weight has been reduced by 25%. In the result the engine has more than 700 horse power. The car also has specially developed six-speed automatic gearbox.

Aston Martin One-77's maximum speed exceeds 200 miles per hour, while acceleration from 0-60 miles per hour will take around 3.5 seconds. For stopping the car it has carbon-ceramic composite brakes to minimize the brake fluid heat system.

The Gemballa Tornado 750 GTS

To most of us a SUV and a fast sports car might seem as two completely different things, but the Porsche developing Cayenne Turbo has proved the contrary. But to go even further tuning atelier Gemballa tries to make the super car out of the German manufacturer SUV. Latest Gemballa preparation is limited, only 50 vehicles will be delivered to costumers from the upcoming series of Tornado 750 GTS.

Gemballa intention to make a SUV a real competitive super car once again is quite serious this time. It is so because at first their engineers are reducing the weight of the car. Tornado GTS 750 is about 250 kg lighter than the stock Cayenne Turbo. In addition, diet does not necessarily imply an ascetic sports interior - Tornado 750 GTS interior is a combination of sportingly elegant Alcantara leather and carbon fiber.

Another and very important factor in ensuring a decent super car dynamics is the engine. Gemballa professionals have increased its power to 750 hp, but the engine torque now reaches 1050Nm. After this Gemballa Tornado GTS 750 is able to accelerate to 60 miles per hour in 4.3 seconds, but its maximum speed is about 180 miles per hour.

Adjustable suspension, which is designed exclusively for this edition of Cayenne, allows it to adjust the clearance in range of 2.5 inches. Exterior has been changed by 22 inch wheels covered by 335/25 size tires. But for stopping the Tornado it carries huge brake discs (diameter: 420mm front and 380mm rear) with six-piston brake clamps.

And at the end there is another one thing. It is the factor that Gemballa Tornado GTS 750 brings the super car status - car price is around 500 thousand dollars.

The Holden Torana GTR-X

When you see a picture of this car it is hard to say that it has been developed 40 years ago. Clean and straight lines are still the reason to consider Holden Torana GTR-X as a very beautiful car. And for us it is hard to imagine that a car like this have been developed in Australia.

In the middle of 1969. the Australian branch of General Motors engineering department was given a task of developing small series sports car that would be cheap enough in the production. Moreover, as the basis for this car is needed to be used existing components of the available models.

And so in 1969. The Holden Torana GTR-X was born. For the base of creation of this car was used the serial car GTR-Xu, which was derived from the Vauxhall Vivas model, which was very popular in Europe in sixties. The two seated Torana GTX-R was planned to be equipped with 3.0 liter six cylinder raw engine, which developed 160 horse power and 285 Nm high torque. Wheel power was transmitted to the rear wheels with a four-speed manual transmission.

In the tests Torana GTX-R was able to reach 210 km per hour. The 160 horsepower engine in those times was a very good achievement. But the most important character was the Torana GTX-R weight. It was 1043 kg (2300 pounds) only, which made it possible for this car to ensure comparable dynamic performance.

Car body was mostly made of fiberglass, and its design provided the unusual purity of lines for those times. Similarly the style was retained in interior where all required gages were placed in a simple design aluminum panel. In addition, the vehicle occurred some quite revolutionary solutions for sixties - ergonomic seating with high back and very good lateral aid, as well as a height adjustable steering wheel.

Torana GTX-R was already very close to get on the production line and there were built several models for pre-production tests and even had a video advertisement. But after all the company decided not to produce it. They were not convinced of the project's financial success.

The Most Prestigious SUV

The new Porsche Cayenne is an SUV car with sports car performance. Cayenne could be most prestigious SUV available on earth. BMW X5 and Mercedes Benz ML 550 at the similar class are not overtly sporty like Cayenne. As a car company, Porsche was really brave entering the SUV market. Do they have the expectation in leading the premium SUV market?

The 4.8 liter V8 engine with 385 horse power output will make the SUV sprint with bulky body to achieve 6.4 to reach the first 60 miles. With 6 Triptionic-S Transmission gets Cayenne to reach 155 miles per hour top speed. It expends around 14 mile per gallon and 21 miles per gallon on the high way.

The interior looks very nice and sophisticated. Almost every single thing in this vehicle is covered by leather. The front console gives full control ever everything. Instead of paddle levers, Cayenne voted to use shift switches. Completed with a large LCD screen for navigation system and BOSE (R) Surround 12 speakers Sound Audio System with SIRIUS Satellite Radio that could provide almost 200 satellite radio, they will add the comfort in driving. The automatic climate control system brings up with other 2 additional rear outlets. It even has computer inside! It is also included driver's and passengers' airbags with multi-stage deployment. All seats are equipped with seat adjustment power to comfort each one of passenger inside for height, lumbar, six and tilt adjustments and for the two seats up front and rare are with arm rests.

From the outside, Porsche Cayenne takes some of Porsche 911 look. With its 21 inch wheel, Cayenne also has other highlighted exterior elements such as projector beam lens halogen headlamps, fog lamps, and windshield wipers with auto-intermittent rain and wipe sensor.

If you would like to have the most sportiest sophisticated SUV, Cayenne is an option.

Reminder: Get Out Of Demand Notes

Update: I have attracted some hostile comments. To clarify my position:

No one who has a low tolerance for risk should be in GMAC Demand Notes. If you are using them for long term savings, get out. If you understand that you are chasing returns, and that this is similar to "junk bonds", and you have a diversified portfolio, have at it.

---

A friend of mine has some of his money in GMAC Demand Notes. I recently reminded him that this is crazy--they are basically unsecured loans to GMAC.

That's why they pay 4%, compared with FDIC insured rates of 2.25% at GMAC Bank.

With GM looking at a possible bankrupcy, and GMAC shaky due to mortgage exposure, no one should be in GMAC Demand Notes. The 1.75% extra yield is not worth the risk. If you have money that you don't mind investing in "junk" debt, buy a diversified junk bond fund or ETF,which gives you some protection against a single company default.

The same goes for Ford's Interest Advantage.

Comparing The Cash For Clunkers Bills

There are two competing "cash for clunkers" bills in the House.  One is more left-leaning, HR520, and the other is more populist, HR1550.  Both bills aim to do the same thing: encourage people to scrap older cars to buy new ones.  But they are very different in how they do so.

In fine high school government class style, I will now contrast the two bills.

Key Differences:
Definition of a "high polluting" or "high consumption" automobile.
HR520: Average (city+highway weighted average) fuel economy of <18mpg.
HR1550: A car built before 2001.

Definition of a "fuel efficient automobile"
HR520: 2003MY or later, <$45,000 price, Tier II Bin 1-5 EPA emissions,
25% better fuel economy than current or future CAFE standards.
HR1550: 2009-2011MY, <$35,000 price, Tier II Bin 5 emissions.

Voucher Amount:
HR520: New car voucher: $4,500 for 7 year old or newer car,
$3,000 for 8-10 year old car, $2,500 for 11+ year old car.
Used car voucher: $3,000, $2,000, $1500.
HR1550: $4,000 for US assembled 27 hwy MPG+, North America 30 hwy MPG+,
or US light truck 24 hwy MPG+; $5,000 for US assembled 30 hwy MPG+,
or US assembled work truck (registered commercial);
$3000 for a NA assembled light truck with 24 hwy MPG+

Both bills require the old vehicle to be destroyed.  Parts other than "engine block and drivetrain" can be recycled, but the titled body, engine block and transmission must be destroyed.

HR520 is obviously geared towards fuel economy.  It doesn't care what kind of car you buy, as long as it is 25% better than the current requirements--which will greatly limit what kind of vehicles would qualify.  It also won't help you unless you are driving something which is relatively thirsty.  A typical case might be a trade-in of an old SUV or pickup truck.

For example, the current standard is 27.5MPG (combined) for cars and 23.1MPG for trucks, so to qualify for the HR520 voucher now you would have to buy a passenger car that gets at least 34.4MPG or a light truck that gets at least 28.9MPG (combined).  The list of vehicles that would currently qualify is short: small and mid-sized hybrids such as Prius and Fusion, Smart, VW TDI, Toyota Yaris, Mini, Ford Escape Hybrid.  HR520 may give more benefit as time goes on, because more fuel efficient cars will appear, ahead of the tougher CAFE standards.

I think HR520 would have an unintended side effect of boosting the residual values of used large engined vehicles.  Cars that would have been worth $700 (like this one) would be worth much more, because they could be bought and titled just to qualify for the voucher.

HR1550 is designed to be more of a short term shot in the arm to the auto industry.  It very broadly defines what a "polluting" and "clean" vehicle is, because it isn't really about being green. It is only in force for several years, and heavily favors U.S. assembled or NAFTA vehicles.  This favoritism could cause trouble at the WTO, although it does include transplants such as Honda who have plants in the U.S.

I prefer HR1550, because it would be better for the Detroit 3 in the short term.

A Prophecy Sadly Comes True

Back in the earlier days of this blog, circa 2005 (when I would get more real comments than spam), I posted that I thought GM should kill Pontiac.  At the time, Bob Lutz admitted that if Pontiac and Buick didn't pull their weight, GM would consider phasing them out.

I wrote:
Pontiac has no real identity--it is the "driving excitement" brand, but the cars are just not that exciting. Until recently, they were just warmed over, plastic clad versions of GM's platforms. Barely disguised Chevys and Buicks.
This was before the G8 appeared, but also before the G5.

The press is now reporting that GM will be killing Pontiac.  From Detroit News:

In its restructuring plan rejected by President Obama's autos task force last month, GM proposed shrinking Pontiac into a niche brand with one or two offerings. But the task force wants GM to cut deeper and faster, necessitating the decision to eliminate Pontiac, which leaves the automaker with four core brands: Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC.
From a product portfolio, this makes sense.  Even with the life-support of Bob Lutz' heroic efforts to get some real excitement product for Pontiac (Solstice, G8, aborted Sport Truck), it was not enough to revive the brand, which was still being poisoned by its old-school badge engineered products.  Whatever street cred was gained by the Solstice and G8 was drained, zombie style, by the G5 (Cobalt), G3 (Aveo!), and Torrent (Equinox).

The big question now is, what happens to the dealers?  Most Pontiac dealers are multi-brand, using Pontiac as a complement to Buick and/or GMC.  Many smaller dealers will not survive without Pontiac.  How will the franchises be closed--through bankrupcy court?  Dealer lawsuits could swamp GM's emergence from bankrupcy court for years.  Or will Obama have to buy them out?

The SUV BMW X6

The recipe for the BMW X6 seems quite simple, take the mechanics, size and stature of a 4x4 and then combine it with the body shell of a coupe, which is designed to seat four people. Surely however, if you have gone through the expense of buying and running a large SUV you would expect that it could carry more people than an averaged sized hatchback. Especially when Volvo XC90 does the job of carrying seven people so well.

Nevertheless BMW believe that the X6 offers the latest evolution in sports utility vehicles combining dynamic excellence with driver enjoyment, and designed to take on rivals in the form of the Porsche Cayenne, Range Rover Sport and Mercedes ML63. However with uncertain petrol prices, high running costs and growing public antipathy towards large 4x4's many previous SUV owners are returning to more humble hatchbacks and saloons.

Inside the BMW X6, the driver is still afforded the lofty driving position that would be recognised by any 4x4 owner, however it is the performance and handling that provides the biggest surprise. Underneath the bonnet is a 4.4 litre V8 engine, which produces 400 bhp and is able to propel this giant of car to 60 in 5.4 seconds.

The BMW X6 comes with an 8 speed automatic that can be controlled by paddles on the steering wheel should you feel the need to make the gear changes yourself. However its BMW's Dynamic Performance Control software that really allows this SUV to shine. The DPC senses the power and grip available to each wheel, and so when one starts to slip, power is automatically transferred to another wheel that has more grip.

From the outside the BMW X6 is certainly an imposing sight with its large 20 inch alloy wheels, powerful xenon headlights, and sleek coupe style body. This is a vehicle sure to stand out on the road, especially when you consider it is wider and longer than the more conventional BMW X5.

There is no getting around the fact that the BMW X6 is a very large 4x4, that will dwarf most vehicles on the road, and perhaps will not be the most subtle way to travel in the current troubled economic climate. However it is also true to say that BMW has introduced a new type of 4x4 and created a stylish and smart looking vehicle, that despite its size and weight handles and looks more like the four door coupe that it was designed around than a standard SUV.

The Best Toyota Hybrid Car this 2009

Toyota, the famous Japanese car brand, is one of the very few car makers that had initially taken the heed to develop and market hybrid cars in the market.

It is in this dedication to excellence and customer satisfaction that sets Toyota above the rest. Now, it enjoys being the top car seller worldwide, beating the long-time leaders and giants like the United States-based General Motors and Germany's Ford and Volkswagen.

Toyota has been on top for valid and practical reasons. It is determined to snap away leadership from threats and competition.

The strategy adopted by the company in unveiling and marketing hybrid cars is immensely amazing. Today, there are two top hybrid car models originating from Toyota that would surely be on top of your list when you shop around for hybrid cars.

The Toyota Prius hybrid

The Toyota Prius definitely is Toyota's middle-sized gasoline-electric or otherwise known as hybrid car. This

hybrid car, according to earlier buyers are really a joy to drive.

The Toyota Prius relies on an effective combination of the gas engine, the electric motor and a set of battery pack that move and run the hybrid car going along the road.

Prices range from $20,875 for the basic model, going up to about $25,940. Demand for this hybrid car model has outpaced its own production; thus, some buyers are already waiting weeks or even months just so they could own a Prius.

Consequently, Toyota has abruptly increased the production of this hybrid car. As most of the car's early buyers and owners would tell you, it is definitely worth all the wait.

Prius' technology

When you are driving a Prius, it would be hard not be amazed by the hybrid car's technology. Engine starting this hybrid car is not done simply by turning a key the traditional way, spurring ignition.

Initiating this hybrid car is done by pressing the round "Power" push button on the dash. You will also find an interactive, a touch sensitive, a multi-information display monitor or screen that is mounted within in the center console.

This display has a number of modes and can indicate things like energy flow between power and train components, the consumption of fuel, the radio settings, the sensitive climate control, or the many other function of this hybrid vehicle.

But the car's technology, just like its ultra and unique futuristic styling and exterior design, could be seen either positively or negatively, that would depend on an observer's point of view.

Overall, the Toyota Prius hybrid car delivers smoother ride and definitely has ample amounts of rooms for a number of passengers. The interior volume is also very versatile. Similarly, the lift-back hatch in the rear and the fold down seats in the rear will make make carrying heavier and larger items so easy.

The Toyota Camry

Definitely, no one will be accused of committing reckless driving for purchasing a Toyota Camry hybrid.

This hybrid car model is so safe, dependable, comfortable and attractive, not to mention predictable. Based on the sales volume-about 430,000 units sold in the United States alone in 2005-most Americans are so happy with the reliability and affordability of this set of wheels that are fit for the family.

The Toyota Camry hybrid has been America's top-selling passenger hybrid vehicle for the past couple of years.

Being practical, why not invest a premium or more for the Toyota Camry hybrid drive, which offers an Environmental Protection Agency high-rating of about 40 miles to a gallon, giving you about 700 miles between breaks or next visit to the nearest gas station?

The Toyota Camry hybrid car is not the industry's first attempt to offer a hybrid vehicle in an upbeat, vogue and ultra-popular model. In late 2004, rival firm Honda launched the hybrid version of its top seller Accord-the United States' second most popular model of car behind the Camry.

But, Honda run short on its effort for hybrids because it used hybrid technology for supposedly better performance rather than for fuel economy, which is deemed more important these times due to the soaring gasoline prices.

Overall, whichever Toyota hybrid car model you choose, for sure you will always be a winner. Toyota really has come up with the best and high-quality cars, hybrid or not, surpassing all the competitors.

Top List Of New Hybrid Cars 2009

The list of hybrid vehicles currently available is fairly long. This is not surprising because hybrid vehicles are tomorrow's cars available today. Particularly for the American market, the hybrid vehicle is highly popular because of the growing concern with the environment.

Below is a random list of hybrid vehicles. Hybrid vehicles that are available only in the Japanese market were excluded. And this is not to discriminate our Japanese friends because it acknowledged that their hybrid vehicles were the first to reach the world wide market in mass production.

What we have down there is a hybrid vehicles' list available in Europe and the United States, where the market for hybrid vehicles is huge.

Under Ford, we have hybrid vehicles list that include Ford Escape Hybrid released in 2005. The second is the Mercury Mariner Hybrid, released in late summer of 2004.

The Ford Escape (Code U204) is a compressed crossover SUV. It is sold by the automaker Ford Motor Company in the market since 2001 and priced below the Ford Explorer.

With Honda, the hybrid vehicles listed are Honda Civic Hybrid, Honda Accord Hybrid, and Honda Insight. The third one was a recipient of International Engine of the Year Award for 2000.

The Honda Insight is a 2-seater hatchback hybrid automobile. It was the first mass-produced hybrid automobile sold in the United States, introduced in 1999. According to the EPA, the 5-speed manual transmission variant of this hybrid is the most fuel-efficient automobile sold in the United States. The Insight also features low emissions: the California Air Resources Board gave the 5-speed model a ULEV rating, and the CVT model earned a SULEV rating.

The Honda Civic Hybrid on the other hand, is a hybrid version of the Honda Civic sedan.

For this 2003 model of the Civic, its manufacturer added a variable transmission with an Integrated Motor Assist hybrid system similar to that of the Honda Insight. This has created a fuel efficient hybrid sedan. The current version of this car however, was redesigned.

The Honda Accord Hybrid though, is a hybrid version of the North American Honda Accord. The Accord Hybrid currently is priced at US$3,000 higher than the EX V6 model Accord, and retains the same trim and feature levels.

For the General Motors, their list of hybrid vehicles comprises the Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra Hybrid, which is considered by many as a Mild hybrid. Also included are the New Flyer and Gillig hybrid buses with Allisons electric drive system as the main feature. The last two are the Opel Astra Diesel Hybrid, and the Saturn VUE Green Line hybrid.

GM launched a hybrid version of the Silverado/Sierra in 2005, as the first ever GM hybrid vehicle. But as what have been said, it is a mild hybrid, strictly speaking. The electric motor serves only as power trimmings, but includes a system that also automatically shuts down when the truck brakes below 13 mph. When this happens, it automatically draws on electric power to restart itself.

The hybrid truck features four 120 volt 20 amp AC outlets. This vehicle is interestingly, suited to those in the building and construction market, since AC power is almost available in their worksite. The extra power reserve of this car makes it well-suited with this particular market.

Toyota on the other hand, includes Prius, the Highlander, and the midsized Camry.

For the record, the Toyota Prius is considered as the world's first commercially mass-produced hybrid vehicle. But although it went on sale in Japan as early as 1997, its worldwide debut was in 2001.

Records show that in 2003, some 160,000 units were produced specifically for three major markets: Japan, Europe, and North America. In Latin, prius means "before" or "first". The Prius 2004 model, was redesigned as a midsize hatchback, and was certified as an Advanced Technology Partial zero-emissions vehicle.

Prius has won the Car of the Year awards for Europe, Japan and North America.

Lexus' list of hybrid vehicles consists of Lexus RX400h, Lexus LS600hL, and the Lexus GS450h. The last on the list of Lexus, GS450h, is a compact hybrid vehicle.

Other hybrid vehicles that made it to the American market includes Nissan's Altima Hybrid; Peugeot's Peugeot 307 CC Hybride HDi; and Renault's Kangoo.

Best Nissan Lights and Bulbs

Our car is so much more than a collection of scrap metal, glass and rubber and so much more than a mere mechanical beast of burden which is used solely to transport us and nothing more. For many of us, we become extremely sentimental and attached to our cars, and are eager to customise and modify them in order to further add that all important personal touch.

Whenever novices hear about people changing their car lights, they (wrongly) assume that this is nothing more than a fashion exercise, that the change is merely a cosmetic one. In reality, the car owner may find that they are able to make significant savings in the long run thanks to a strategic choice of car lights, it should be noted that the standard lights that are sold with cars are halogen powered. The reason this is significant is that halogen emits a rather weak output, furthermore it has an extremely short useful life span and to add insult to injury is costly as well. In short, the industry standard variety of car lights are frankly, grossly inefficient and pose little real benefit to the car owner.

If you are planning on changing your Nissan Lights please ensure that you opt for the xenon powered lights as these have a lifespan of around ten years, and produce as much light as a street lamp! For those of you who struggle to drive at night, you can now set off on the road secure in the knowledge that visibility will be significantly improved.

Given how many different retailers sell Nissan Lights, you may find that you quickly find yourself overwhelmed by the vast tracts of information presented before you and so you will no doubt want some advice as to how to pick the best of the bunch so to speak. Therefore, to that effect, you may want to take a look on some of the various consumer review sites which are on the internet. These review sites are totally free to use, and feature personal opinions from ordinary consumers.

As a result, these testimonies will be fully objective and critical allowing for a clear overview of the various merits and drawbacks of a particular product range. This way, you will be able to weigh up the various factors involved in the purchasing decision process, such as value for money, warranty on offer, customer service etc. With a sterling combination of qualitative data (in the form of personal feedback and opinion) along with quantitive data (which is objective facts and figures) you will be able to more readily and easily make a final judgement call, as to the best supplier for Nissan Lights.

Another excellent way to help reduce the mass amounts of information and web pages you will inevitably be swamped with, is to make use of price comparison sites which will actually filter and sort the various returns and sort them into whatever order you require, be it most or least costly first.

online is not only an attractive option due to the ease of use in which the suppliers can be found but also because of the discounts which are made available on the internet as well just make sure that payment is made and accepted through a legitimate and reputable finance organisation.

The new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Chrysler has had a tough time encouraging new car sales, and part of the problem is a lack of fresh offerings. In an attempt to remedy this, Chrysler is gearing up to release the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Jeep Grand Cherokee has long been an important model to Jeep and Chrysler, and the all-new 2011 model promises to be incredibly important as Chrysler needs to have a hit among consumers.

Just released at the 2009 New York Auto Show, the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee shows plenty of promise. The exterior design is far more upscale than the current model. In addition, the new Grand Cherokee is based on the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, which Chrysler Jeep Dealership St Louis expects will ensure this new jeep gets plenty of technology and a quality ride. The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee also features a new air suspension that can raise or lower the vehicle about 4 inches. The latest Cherokee is clearly an attempt to be the premier luxury model in the Jeep lineup, while also retaining the Jeep's classic off-road prowess.

With an all-new fully independent suspension, coupled with a substantial more rigid chassis, the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee should provide outstanding on-road driving dynamics. For off-road enthusiasts, used car dealer Birmingham expects the 2011 Cherokee should meet any challenges with ease. The new model includes an electronic limited-slip differential to provide superior off-road traction, in addition to a transfer case with various electronically controlled settings.

Inside, most buyers will notice a stark difference when compared with the current Jeep Grand Cherokee. The interior is far more luxurious, and features loads of leather, real wood accents, and even front and rear heated seats. While making the interior more luxurious, used car Lubbock dealers note that the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee also remains functional with ample storage pins and cargo spaces, just like the current model.

Under the hood of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a V6 engine that produces 280 horsepower while still providing competitive fuel efficiency. Also available is a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 that produces 360 horsepower and is certainly an attractive choice for those that require high towing capabilities.

Although the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee appears to be more luxurious than ever before, Buffalo Chrysler dealers were happy to hear that Chrysler execs claim that it will still be priced for volume. If it retains the current pricing, Chrysler may very well have the success it needs to fuel sales and other all-new products.

Another Sign Of The Carpocalypse

(I hope Jalopnik doesn't go 1-800-Call-Sam on me for using "carpocalypse".)

One of the horseman of the carpocalypse rode through my workplace.  We used to have a cafeteria in our building which was run by a major catering company.  Between the layoffs and people cutting back on spending, they couldn't make money at it.

Gone are all the made-to-order stations, and the hot entree line.  The cafeteria was changed into a convenience store--prepackaged sandwiches and salads, candy, chips, and bottled drinks.  Prices also went up.

The horseman left with heads hanging on his saddle.  Two managers, a chef, several cooks, and others lots their jobs.  I heard him rapping on the way out as he rode, "I'm rollin' down a hill, snowballin' gettin' bigger..."

Cutting Back

I am, thank God, employed.

However, I don't have high confidence that I will be employed at the end of the calendar year. Considering the way the economy is going, I guess I have about a 50% chance, assuming that there is no rebound in car sales.

So, my family has been cutting back to save some more cash for our rainy day fund.

Here are a few examples of ways that I have been saving money:

  • We don't have cable or satellite TV anymore, we are using one of those digital TV converter boxes on our 10 year old analog TV to watch free over-the-air TV.  With rabbit ears.  It works, and besides, TV is over-rated.  Everyone could benefit from more reading time.
  • I don't subscribe to the local paper, instead I read it for free online (sorry Detroit News and Free Press).  I get a few other magazines such as Consumer Reports for free as hand-me-downs from other family members.  There's some thrifty advice you'll never read in CR: hobo your Consumer Reports!
  • My family has nearly stopped eating out.  Except for the occasional lunch with my co-workers, or a night where we don't have the will to cook anything.
  • I have gotten used to driving no more than a couple of miles over the speed limit.  My mid-sized sedan with its <2.5l>
  • I am stretching my oil changes out to 6,000 miles (manufacturer suggests 3,000 miles on my wife's car and 5,000 on mine).
  • I have cut back on beer and wine consumption.  I used to take a bottle of beer or a glass of wine every day, now I find myself stretching it out by drinking on weekends.  I do have a weakness for scotch, though...
  • I have cut back on how much meat I eat.  I think I eat red meat less than once a week now, and chicken or fish no more than a couple of times a week.  I admit this is also to improve my overall health, but you can save quite a bit of money this way.
  • I have cut back on buying gadgets, except for ones that have an actual useful purpose.  For example, my old Dell laptop (Windows XP, P4) works fine, no need for one of the new ones--I just replace broken parts, which are cheap and plentiful, when something breaks.  I did buy a new digital camera, but I sold the old one on eBay so it was not a big investment.
  • My wife and I don't give each other expensive gifts for birthdays and holidays, just small items to express the thought.
If you think about your spending habits more carefully, you might be amazed at how many places you are spending that you could trim back, with a little bit of adjustment.

Of course, I'm one of thousands doing the same thing.  As a result, the economic death spiral accelerates.  Restaurants are closing, food producers are hurting, newspapers are going out of business, magazines are getting skinnier (even Consumer Reports).

The Volvo S80

The average sales rep or executive will tell you that one of the most important factors of their careers is to make a good impression. This can be referred to the suit you're wearing, the way you have your hair cut, but more than ever, the car you drive. The executive car has got to look the part, as well as being a great endurance machine with reliability as a paramount concern. These days the recession has put pressure on businesses to cut back on all their budgets, so wildly expensive company cars are not part of a viable business model. So what company car do you choose when you need style, performance, reliability, but at a price tag that won't leave your balance sheet looking rather blank? Consider the Volvo S80.

The Volvo S80 definitely ticks the aesthetic boxes. The model I tested came in silver and its sleek lines made it look like the kind of vehicle The Silver Surfer would drive if he gave up superpowers and decided to get a job as a Senior Executive at a Blue-chip company. It was also an immensely pleasurable place to sit; the plush surroundings and impressive dashboard gives the impression of class and quality that belie the modest price-tag.

The Volvo S80 I tried, the 2.0 Litre Petrol version, was an extremely pleasurable drive. The four cylinder engine makes the right sounds when you push it and gets the power down on to the tarmac, but remains a very calm and smooth ride. In demographic terms, this is perfect for the target market; executives.

Volvo have an unrivalled reputation for safety and reliability, which must surely be a major plus point when considering the Volvo S80 as a company car. It combines the ability to make a great visual impression, whilst maintaining the kind of grace and dignity in performance terms to give you a very pleasurable drive.

Pete J Ridgard is a writer and a car enthusiast. Here he discusses the merits of driving a Volvo S80.

From car shows to show off your beauty, clean engine, clean insides and perfectly restored Plymouth barracuda, to talking about the many things that are not viewable from the outside, cars have become an incredible crowd pleaser.

This car is a classic and a beautiful ride that captures the attention and imagination of anyone you drive past in it, but the real fun is in restoring her back to factory and getting into the guts of this American classics's chassis.

The Mercedes-Benz SLK350 Review

Too small and uncomfortable.. That more or less sums up what I think of the Mercedes SLK 350.

I have always enjoyed Mercedes cars and my SLK experiences started with a 2002 SLK 320 Manual. It was bright red and my, so called, friends referred to it as a "hairdressers" car!

Looks aside, it was not a bad car, the gearbox was a bit notchy and the suspension was not very sporty but on the whole I quite liked it. So when I first took delivery of my SLK 350 auto with the F1 style front end and the more powerful engine I was excited, I like to drive fairly quickly and I enjoy driving for drivings sake. The new car looked better than the old model and the interior felt more up to date.

My first drive of the 350 was quite interesting. As I pulled away, with far too much throttle, the rear wheels snatched at the tarmac for grip and the car snaked it's way up the road. My first impression was positive, I like a lively drive and this certainly felt quite lively. But my initial impression did not last for very long. I discovered that if I drove the car with too much vigor that the gearbox would soon start to mess about, it would refuse to change up and hold the car in a gear for far too long. On one occasion I arrived at a t-junction which was on a fairly steep incline; the car would not move! it just sat there with it's engine revving away. After what felt like an age a gear was found with a bang and away we went.

I continued my drive in a far more sedate manner and the car behaved as it should, but this experience had tainted my view and I was never particularly happy with the car's performance.

Another problem with the SLK 350 Auto is one of having a very slow gearbox when it comes to selecting reverse gear after drive. If you are driving along a busy high street and spot a parking space you pull up just past the gap and select R on the auto box and then wait.......it feels as though it's going to take forever. The only thing I will say about this is that it's a problem with ALL modern Mercedes auto's and the SLK is not alone.

The Interior cabin of SLK is quite well appointed, if a little on the small side. There is a distinct lack of accessible storage and trying to find find somewhere to put your house keys, mobile phone and pack of gum is quite a challenge.

The folding roof is quite superb and should be a standard feature on all cars. The only small problem is the amount of luggage space space left when the roof is folded down.

The cars performance on a nice wide open, smooth, bump free road is very good. The car accelerates well and stops well. The engine feels a little harsh when being driven in anything other than a docile way and I have already given my opinion of the gearbox.

The car's suspension is very hard and is set up in such a way that hard driving into corners will produce a little initial under-steer followed by very controllable over-steer. The suspension is, in my opinion, just too hard for everyday use.

In conclusion, The Mercedes SLK 350 is not my type of car. It's not an exciting drive in the sense that a Caterham or a TVR is exciting and it's not comfortable like some of it's bigger brothers. I think this car is targeted at the 50+ female driver who does not want to drive quickly and is more interested in the look rather than build quality and performance.

The Jaguar D Type

The Jaguar D-Type was built between nineteen fifty four and nineteen fifty seven, a total of three years. The D type shared the same engine design as the previous C Type Jaguar, although this was the only similarity between the two cars, with the D Type having major changes made from its predecessor. The most notable change was the monocoque chassis, which was highly innovative and drastically improved aerodynamics and efficiency, a large feat for a competitive racing car. The car originated as a competitive racing car, but once Jaguar ceased racing the D-Type was converted for public sales.

The Jaguar XKSS was the road car created from the left over D-Types. An additional seated was added to the car, a full windscreen, a passenger door, and other changes to make the car more practical for the general public.

Unfortunately for Jaguar, a fire destroyed nine of the twenty five cars which were either completed or close to completion on the twelfth of February nineteen fifty seven. The market for high performance European cars was highly profitable in that time, the main reason for converting the unused chassis into production cars to gain back some of the investment.

The design on the D-Type really mirrored that of an aircraft, with the innovative introduction of the monocoque body style. The fuel for the car was within bags within the cells of the chassis, another design aspect which mimicked that of aircraft engineering. The aircraft style like engineering was down to the work of Sayer, a former Bristol Aeroplane Company worker, who successfully brought his innovative design to the table.

From a mechanical standpoint, the D-Type shared many attributes with that of the previous C-Type. The engine was unchanged, and the disc brakes kept. The major changes came from the work of Sayer, who managed to make the car much more aerodynamic and efficient. The body style was so successful the Jaguar E-Type maintained many features as the successor of the legendary D-Type.

Bonhams auction sold a first factory production D-Type for £2.2m in the summer of 2008 at their popular auctions.

The best 1950 Allard J2

If you have been looking for a stunning sports car that exemplifies the best of English and American technological innovation and design the 1950 Allard J2 tops the list. These cars were produced during the 1950s and they were incredibly popular during this time period. What was even more amazing is that the cost of these cars was quite moderate. These cars enjoyed a popular appeal in both Europe and America when they were first produced and still today they are one of the most highly sought of older sports car models. This roadster was only produced as a limited series of 99 vehicles between the years 1950 and 1951.

The J2 Allard gave a driver an impressive amount of speed and performance and the handling was smooth enough to make them suitable for highly experienced or novice handlers. When the 1950 Allard J2 was put onto the racing circuit the sporty vehicle quickly earned first place listings in race courses on both continents. Sebring and Bridgehampton were only two of the places where this little speedster earned its reputation. Today these well built coupes are perfect specimens to be used on road rally courses and of course the cars are highly desirable by people who only want them placed in show competitions.

One of the best known construction features of the 1950s Allard J2 is the split I- beam axle used in the front end design. This gave the cars that fiercely distinct elongated nose; but it also made it possible to attach the special telescopic shock absorbers and heavy coiled springs that created an exceptional ride. There was a track rod at the rear of the split axle design and it was fashioned from three separate sections. In addition there were two idler arms at the rear and two radial arms which were also attached to the axle beams. To give the vehicle additional stability and suspension assistance there was a de Dion axle connected to the axle at the rear with the same style of coils and telescoping shocks that were used at the nose assembly. The incredible power of the J2 Allard in 1950 was made possible by a special Ford torque tube which was very much different from what other similar speedsters were using.

When the very first of the 99 1950 Allard J2 vehicle models were being rolled off the assembly line they were made with the souped up V8 Mercury flathead engines. These engines gave the cars incredible power and speed but as the racing legend of the Allard J2 models grew the increased need for even better speed was a must. This need was answered by installing new V8 engines in the Allard vehicle line including the Ardun OHV flathead and the Chrysler Company's powerful Hemi V8 model.

The chassis of the original 1950 J2 Allards all had exceptionally deep sides and these were interconnected with four big bore tubing assemblies. The cars transmissions had more bracing than just the four large diameter tubes and this gave the vehicle outstanding stability but still the overall weight was quite light. This made these roadsters one of the speediest sports car designs on the road.

The lightweight bodies of the 1950 Allard J2 sports coupes were constructed from featherweight aluminum sheets that were molded and then attached with specialized bolts and fasteners. The fasteners were designed for quick and easy release and together the bolts and fasteners made stripping the car easy and fast. This meant that if the cars needed to be worked on by a mechanic, upgraded, or repaired it could be done in the shortest time frame possible. Even road, in-house or mechanical testing on the vehicle was able to be accomplished in unusually fast turnover times due to the innovative engineering and design of the cars.

There were some specific 1950 Allard J2 vehicle models that were only built for competition on the racing circuit. These powerful workhorses were equipped with the strongest V8 engines and tanks designed to hold 40 gallons of racing fuel. You could always tell one of these cars because the place the spare tire is mounted is not at the tail end of the car but on the side midway between the driver cockpit and forward fender.

A J2 Allard in 1950 was an amazing machine with some superior statistics including a 331 cc Cadillac V8 engine. This powerhouse could knock out 300 horsepower without flinching, and remember this was almost 60 years ago. The automotive engineers were forward thinking and highly innovative when it came to creating power and speed for the 1950 Allard J2 cars. In addition to a 331cc engine the Allard used triple, double barrel carbs and meticulously designed camshafts that combined to deliver some of the most powerful roadsters of the mid 20th century. Sports car enthusiasts pay dearly whenever they have a chance to purchase one of these rare cars from the 1950s.

The 2007 Volkswagen Jetta

After graduating college I was looking for a new car to replace my worn out Honda that had little to no life left. The price I was hoping to pay was around $20,000 giving me plenty of options to choose from. After test driving several different models, I decided on the Jetta. My experience has been mostly positive, but the car is not without faults.

Acceleration: My car has the 5cylinder engine with 150hp. It moves the car around sufficiently enough, but the car is not fast by any means. Luckily the transmission is a 6 speed to ensure you are always in the optimal gear. If you buy a brand new Jetta, the car should feel a bit more peppy because it has an extra 20 horsepower. Overall I'd give the car a 7/10 for acceleration.

Transmission: The transmission is a 6 speed automatic which is unheard of in this price range. It is very smooth. I'd rate the transmission a 9/10.

Handling/Steering: The car steers accurately and provides just the right amount of feedback. Handling is pretty impressive and the car always feels in control. Overall I rate it an 8/10 for handling.

Ride: The car rides firm, but is comfortable and controlled. I prefer a firmer ride to the soft mushy feeling you get in a car like the Toyota Camry. Overall 8/10.

Seating: There is plenty of room front and back. for passengers and the seating is firm, but comfortable. There are plenty of adjustments for the front seats including lumbar adjustment. The steering wheel tilts and telescopes making it easy for anyone to find a good driving position. Overall 9/10

Trunk: The trunk is huge, and is bigger than most. In addition, the car has hooks for you grocery bags so they stay in an upright position. It's touches like these that make this car special. 10/10

Exterior Styling: The car looks classy with its chrome grille treatment, but the car is a bit too tall for my tastes. Some of the exterior views look a bit too Japanese for my taste, including the rear which has tail lights like the Toyota Corolla. Overall 7/10

Interior Styling: The interior looks more expensive the anything in the class. The materials are rich and surfaces feel high quality. 10/10

Safety: This car has airbags galore including two front, two side, and head airbags as well. 10/10

Reliability: I haven't had any major problems with the car, but it only has 33,000 miles on it. The transmission kicks down sharply sometimes and some of the interior elements have come loose. Also, the passenger door has been sticky ever since I bought it. People have to pull the door handle twice to open it. Overall I'd rate reliability a 7/10.

Price/Value: Considering its features, quality, and space the Jetta offers good value for the money. 8/10

Overall: Overall I have been pretty happy with the car and would rate it an 8/10. If Volkswagen adds a bit more power (which it has recently done), give the car more German styling, and fix some of the reliability problems, I just may purchase another Volkswagen Jetta in the future.
